Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Organism

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

MRSA infections are divided into two categories by source: (1) healthcare-associated (HA-MRSA) secondary to hospitalization, surgery, long-term care, dialysis, invasive device, etc; and (2) community-associated (CA-MRSA).

Methicillin resistance is associated with the acquisition of the mecA gene, which encodes the mutant penicillin-binding protein, PBP 2a.
