American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease)

DDx

  • Acute stage: malaria, rheumatic fever, African trypanosomiasis
  • Myocarditis due to other causes, e.g., coxsackie, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, drugs
  • Arrhythmia or congestive heart failure due to other causes, e.g., sick-sinus syndrome, coronary artery disease
  • Toxic megacolon due to inflammatory bowel disease or Clostridium difficile-associated colitis
  • Idiopathic achalasia
