Etiology

  • Microvascular infarction, e.g., diabetes mellitus, hypertension
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Space-occupying lesion, especially posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysm
  • Ophthalmoplegic migraine
  • Brainstem infarct or vertebrobasilar insufficiency
  • Temporal (giant cell) arteritis
  • Uncal herniation
