Etiology

  • Caval webs
  • Myeloproliferative disease, eg, polycythemia vera
  • Right-sided congestive heart failure (CHF) or constrictive pericarditis
  • Neoplasm compressing hepatic vein
  • Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
  • Behçet’s syndrome
  • Oral contraceptives or pregnancy
  • Hypercoagulable state
  • Post bone-marrow transplant
  • "Bush teas" (pyrrolizidine alkaloids)
