Etiology

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Corticosteroids
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • Starvation or rapid weight loss
  • Hypobetalipoproteinemia
  • Total parenteral nutrition
  • Drugs: corticosteroids, amiodarone, tamoxifen
  • Wilson's disease
  • Jejunoileal bypass
  • Poisons: carbon tetrachloride, yellow phosphorus
  • Microvesicular steatosis (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease usually macrovesicular): Reye's syndrome, valproic acid toxicity, tetracycline, acute fatty liver of pregnancy
Other causes of hepatomegaly
  • Alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Hepatitis, eg, viral, alcoholic, toxic
  • Cirrhosis
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma or metastatic cancer
