Etiology

Reactive thrombocytosis (usually platelets <1,000,000)

  • Inflammatory disease, e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis
  • Chronic infection
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Postsplenectomy (transient)
Myeloproliferative disorder
  • Essential thrombocytosis
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • Myelofibrosis
