Etiology

  • Bacterial, eg, Pseudomonas, Moraxella, Staphylococcus, pneumococcus
  • Herpes simplex keratitis
  • Ophthalmic zoster
  • Fungal keratitis
  • Acanthamoeba keratitis
  • Contact lenses (especially soft)
  • Neurotrophic keratitis (lack of corneal sensation)
  • Exposure keratitis (inadequate eyelid closure)
  • Severe dry eyes
  • Severe allergic eye disease
  • Behçet’s syndrome
  • Topical steroids
