Description

  • Tick-borne human infections by obligate intracellular bacteria, presenting as acute febrile illnesses with nonspecific symptoms

Etiology

Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (Hme)

  • Ehrlichia chaffeensis:
    • Vector tick: lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum)
    • Geographic distribution: Predominantly southeast, south-central, from the East Coast extending westward to Texas
  • E. ewingii:
    • Vector tick: Lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum)
    • Geographic distribution: Southeastern, south-central, and Midwestern states
  • E. muris eauclairensis:
    • Vector tick: Blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis)
    • Geographic distribution: Minnesota, Wisconsin

Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis (Hga)

  • Anaplasma phagocytophilum:
    • Vector ticks: Deer tick (I. scapularis), blacklegged tick (I. pacificus)
    • Geographic range: Northeastern and upper Midwestern states and northern California
  • Frequent coinfections with other diseases transmitted by I. scapularis:
    • Lyme disease
    • Babesiosis
    • Powassan virus
