Dedication

Peter Rosen, MD was a larger-than-life figure and many regard him as the “father” of emergency medicine. He was a mentor, teacher, inspiration, and friend to all of us, but perhaps most important was his commitment to family as husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His charisma, enthusiasm, and love of life were obvious in every encounter and provide all of us with a perspective that is fundamental to the love of our specialty. Peter taught us how to care for the most difficult patients who present for treatment in the emergency department.

Originally trained as a general surgeon serving in the Army and later practicing in Wyoming, he subsequently worked at the University of Chicago where he started the residency in emergency medicine. Moving to Denver as the Chief of Emergency Medicine until 1989, Peter created an environment that stimulated learning, excellence in clinical care, and leadership.

Thanks to Peter’s vision, the Denver program was the home of many of the pioneers of emergency medicine during the last three decades. The University of California, San Diego then recruited him to serve as a mentor and role model for the next generation of students of emergency medicine. Beyond the clinical setting, Peter could always be found skiing, playing tennis, golfing, and sailing with abandon.

During his career he was the editor of many of the world’s leading emergency medicine textbooks and journals. Peter served on many academic societies including the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency

Medicine during its formative years and was recognized for his outstanding contributions and leadership by the American College of Emergency Medicine and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. Peter’s imprint upon emergency medicine is instrumental in the growth of our specialty and the advancement of excellence in the care of our patients in the emergency department setting. It is with incredible reverence, respect, and love that we dedicate this edition of Rosen & Barkin’s 5-Minute Emergency Medicine to Peter. Peter conceptualized this book in our initial discussions and was a force in allowing us to continue its evolution.

Thank you Peter for your dedication to colleagues, students, and patients over nearly five decades. All of us have benefitted from your wisdom and insight and will forever be indebted to you for your mentorship during our growth as clinicians and teachers.

Preface

Rosen & Barkin’s 5-Minute Emergency Medicine Consult continues to reflect the dynamic nature of our practice of emergency medicine. Our specialty provides care to our patients within an environment that presents challenges to the clinician as we approach a range of conditions and acuity that is encompassed within our practices. Time is obviously of the essence and this book is created to focus on the needs of clinicians working in emergency and urgent care settings. Prolonged deliberation is
often unrealistic. It must be instinctive to think about the statistically rare, but clinically serious entity, rather than to just reach for the probable, but non–life-threatening diagnosis.

The concise format of this book allows the busy clinician to have a timely response. It presents data in a readily available format that can be frequently used in the trenches. It is written by practicing clinicians for our colleagues, synthesizing a vast body of information into tightly formatted chapters that stimulate analysis and assessment. The chapters are not meant to be comprehensive but rather a place to confirm a diagnosis supported by clinical judgment and the subjective and objective evidence of a patient’s presentation.

We are delighted with this edition that we have been able to add new topic editors Amanda L. Doodlesack, Michael E. Nelson, and Erik K. Nordquist as well as PharmD editor, Zachery Halford. The book integrates our authors’ expertise, experience, and knowledge and we are appreciative of the contribution of the current and past authors. It is intended to be readily integrated into practice, rather than being definitive and all encompassing. The new edition, which includes 17 new topics as well as online-only topic content to facilitate reader access, works to incorporate up-to-date information and approaches to management, while modifying the topics that reflect some of the new challenges we face.

Our objective is to make Rosen & Barkin’s 5-Minute Emergency Medicine Consult useful to both novices and experienced clinicians in emergency and urgent care medicine. The information and organization are designed to be easily used within the «chaos» that surrounds our clinical settings.

Clinical judgment, experience, intuition, and “group thought” are the foundations of our clinical practice. It is our hope that this book will serve emergency physicians, nurses, physician assistants, emergency medical personnel, and students as a readily used resource in facilitating excellence in our care of our patients who always remain as the focus of our efforts, while advancing the specialty that we are committed to advancing.

IF, NOTWITHSTANDING THE OTHER TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, UNBOUND SHOULD HAVE ANY LIABILITY TO YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY FOR ANY LOSS, HARM OR DAMAGE, YOU AND UNBOUND AGREE THAT SUCH LIABILITY SHALL UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES EXCEED THE LESSER OF $1,000 OR THE FEES YOU PAID US DURING THE THREE (3) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DAY THE ACT OR OMISSION OCCURRED THAT GAVE RISE TO YOUR CLAIM.
