- Class of sedative–hypnotic agents
- Derivatives of barbituric acid
- Mechanism:
- Enhances activity of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
- At high levels, directly opens GABA-A associated chloride channel
- Leads to inhibition of vascular smooth muscle tone
- May lead to direct myocardial depression
